More About An American Life
In a country ruled by laws, it seemed to me that nothing was more important than removing politics from the process of choosing judges. During previous administrations in California, governors had often handed out judgeships to friends and cronies like prizes at a company picnic. Not only had this produced a lot of inferior judges, it had placed a number of partisans on the bench who believed that putting on the black robes of a judge gave them a license to rewrite the laws. I wanted judges who would interpret the Constitution, not rewrite it. Ronald... Looking back at the recent history of the world, I find it amazing how far civilization has retrogressed so quickly. As recently as World War Igranted the rules were violated at timeswe had a set of rules of warfare in which armies didnt make war against civilians: Soldiers fought soldiers. Big 752 page book- Reagan's autobiography written after two terms as California Governor, and two as US President (plus sports caster and actor). I never understood people writing autobiographies in mid life... One reason I read this is that I've always felt bad about dissing Ron and Nancy in an essay I wrote while living in Africa... There were times when I felt like I was plodding though the end of this book. In the end I was pleased that I stuck with it. I especially found the first section of the book of interest; although President Reagan was born in the same year as my mother I feel a connection since I was born in the same town where Reagan grew up and went...
